Latvia: The expanded range of religious organizations pushing chaplains

Governmental Committee of Latvia adopted a draft regulation on kapellanskoy service, developed by the Ministry of Justice, according to which will clarify a number of aspects in the regulations.

The Justice Ministry said that under the new rules will be extended circle of religious organizations, who will have the right to nominate for the post of chaplain candidates.

Namely, in the future for the post of chaplain will be able to nominate their candidates by: Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Latvian Roman Catholic Church of Latvia, the Latvian Orthodox Church, the Central Board Drevlepravoslavnoj Pomeranian Church of Latvia, the Latvian United Methodist Church, Union Baptist congregations in Latvia, the Latvian Association of Communities Seventh-day Adventists, the Riga Jewish Community, the Union of Latvian Pentecostal International Church of God, as well as central leadership of the Latvian Pentecostal communities.

Under the new rules, the association of professional chaplains should seek close cooperation with organizations in which to work chaplains. In turn, the organization which will serve as a chaplain, is entitled to request from the Association of opinion on the eligibility of the candidate for the post of chaplain in the field.

In the future command of Latvian National Armed Forces, the leadership of the Office of places of detention, the administration of airports, ports and terminals, as well as the administration of hospitals and social care institutions will be required to inform the church about the vacancies for the post of chaplain at the same time pointing out the requirements which will be presented to the candidate .

The draft new rules stipulates the duties of chaplains. In particular, the National Armed Forces chaplain, performing the duties of a priest, is expected to attend the military, to strengthen their faith, ginger, as well as soothe and support the relatives of those killed or dead soldiers.

In prison chaplains have to visit the correctional employees and inmates, to conduct an ecumenical spiritual care, to provide moral support and advice on matters of religion and ethics, and conduct activities to promote and strengthen morals.
